Next generation dye solar cell (DSC) windows could make that possible. These windows will be able to turn buildings into power plants and provide great opportunities to design stylish buildings that generate renewable energy.
Such windows are currently on display at the Seoul City Government’s Human Resource Development Center. They are made by Eagon Industrial Co. Ltd, a Korean glass maker that specializes in window and door systems. The windows, pictured below, have a beautiful design while generating clean, renewable solar energy.
The tiles used in the window systems were made and provided by Dyesol Limited’s Korean joint venture partner, Timo Technology. Dyesol Limited, headquartered in Australia, is a global supplier of dye solar cell materials, technology and expertise.
Dyesol-Timo joined forces in 2008, with Dyesol providing its DSC expertise, materials and equipment solutions to develop products and launch a prototype line. Timo Technology provided R&D and manufacturing expertise.
Their window installation is the first of its kind in Korea. According to some reports, if the showcase is successful, Seoul City will apply the technology to other buildings.
Simply put, you can think of these windows as using artificial photosynthesis on modern-day stained windows. The technology has lower costs than other similar types of technology and produces electricity more efficiently (even in low light conditions) and can be directly placed into buildings as windows or metal sheets rather than taking up roof or land space.
